Set Up Your Workstation for the First Time
Set Up Your Workstation for the First Time
Overview
A good workstation setup saves you back pain and time every day. This guide walks you through the physical setup of your laptop, monitors, dock, keyboard, and mouse on your first day.
Before You Begin
- Your laptop and power adapter.
- Any monitors, dock or USB-C hub, keyboard, and mouse you were issued.
- All cables that came with your equipment.
- A clear desk space and access to a power outlet.
Steps
- Place your laptop on the desk, closed if you plan to use external monitors as your main displays.
- Plug the dock or USB-C hub into a power outlet, then connect it to your laptop with the included cable. The dock supplies power to the laptop, so a separate charger is not needed.
- Connect each monitor to the dock with the included HDMI or DisplayPort cable. Plug each monitor's power cable into the outlet.
- Connect your keyboard and mouse to the dock's USB ports. Wireless models: plug the USB receiver in or pair over Bluetooth.
- Turn on the monitors and laptop. Sign in following Log Into Your New Windows 11 Computer.
- Adjust monitor position: top of the screen should sit at or slightly below eye level. Arms relaxed, elbows at 90 degrees.
- Set your primary display: open Settings → System → Display, click the monitor you use most, and check Make this my main display.
- Arrange icons and taskbar to your preference. Right-click the desktop to access display options.
Troubleshooting
- If a monitor stays black: check both ends of the video cable and confirm the monitor is on the correct input (HDMI 1, DisplayPort, and so on).
- If your laptop does not charge through the dock: unplug and replug the USB-C cable. Use the port labeled with a power icon on the dock.
- If the mouse or keyboard does not respond: replace the batteries or check the on/off switch. Move the wireless receiver closer if needed.
- If display arrangement looks wrong: in Settings → System → Display, drag the monitor boxes to match your physical layout.
- If you need ergonomic accessories: see Request New Hardware From IT.
