Log Into Your New Windows 11 Computer

Overview

Your new BMIT-managed laptop is enrolled in Microsoft Entra ID (your company's cloud identity), so the same work email and password you already use for email, Teams, and OneDrive is what signs you into Windows. The first sign-in joins the device to your account, builds your profile, walks you through MFA, and sets a PIN. Plan to finish it in one sitting.

Before You Begin

  • Your work email address and password. New employees start with the temporary password HappyFirstDay!.
  • Your phone with Microsoft Authenticator installed and your work account already added.
  • An internet connection. The first sign-in must reach the cloud to verify credentials.
  • 15 to 20 minutes for the profile to build. Keep the laptop plugged in.

Steps

  1. Power on the laptop and wait for the Welcome screen. Power button locations vary; contact BMIT if you cannot find yours.
  2. In the bottom-right corner of the sign-in screen, click the network icon. Pick your Wi-Fi SSID and enter the network password. A wired cable also works.
  3. If the sign-in screen shows a logged-in user labelled BMIT, click Other user in the bottom-left corner. That account belongs to the technician who staged the device.
  4. Type your full work email address and press Tab or Enter.
  5. Enter your password (or temporary password) and click the arrow icon to submit.
  6. If you are a new employee, Windows asks for the temporary password again, then shows More information is required. Click Next.
  7. On the Keep your account secure screen, approve the request in Microsoft Authenticator on your phone. Match the number on the laptop. SMS is being deprecated, so use the Authenticator app whenever possible.
  8. When prompted, set a new password. Enter the temporary password once, then your new password twice. Click Next.
  9. Set up a PIN when prompted. The PIN must be at least 6 digits, and it is not the same as your password. Every BMIT computer you sign into will ask for a PIN.
  10. Wait while Windows finishes preparing your desktop. The screen may go black or restart. Do not power off.
  11. When the desktop loads, open Microsoft Edge or Outlook to confirm the sign-in worked.

Troubleshooting

  • If your password is rejected: confirm caps lock is off. After three failed tries your account may lock for 30 minutes.
  • If Authenticator does not prompt you: open the app and check for a pending approval at the top of the screen.
  • If the screen sits at "Preparing Windows" for more than 30 minutes: leave it plugged in and wait. Force-restarting can corrupt the profile.
  • If you see "Your IT administrator has restricted access": the device is not yet assigned to you. Contact BMIT.
  • If Wi-Fi will not connect during setup: use a wired cable for the first sign-in. You can join Wi-Fi after the desktop loads.
