Change Your Primary Monitor in Windows
Overview
Your primary monitor is the one that shows your taskbar, sign-in screen, and most new apps when they open. If you added monitors and Windows picked the wrong one as primary, you can change it in two minutes.
Before You Begin
- All monitors are connected and showing video.
- You are signed in to your Windows 11 computer with your work account.
- You know which physical monitor you want as primary (the one you face most).
Steps
- Right-click an empty area of your desktop and choose Display settings.
- At the top of the Display page, Windows shows a layout with numbered boxes (1, 2, 3) representing your monitors.
- Click Identify. Each monitor flashes its number on screen so you know which is which.
- Click the numbered box for the monitor you want to set as primary.
- Scroll down and expand Multiple displays.
- Check the box labeled Make this my main display.
- Windows moves the taskbar to that monitor and updates the layout.
- If the monitor positions look wrong (mouse goes to the wrong screen), drag the numbered boxes at the top of the page to match your physical setup, then click Apply.
Troubleshooting
- If "Make this my main display" is greyed out: the monitor you selected is already primary. Pick a different one.
- If a monitor is missing from the layout: click Detect at the bottom of the multiple displays section. Check the cable and that the monitor is on.
- If the layout drag-and-drop will not save: click Apply after each change. Windows asks you to confirm within 15 seconds.
- If text or icons look fuzzy after changing primary: different monitors use different scaling. Set each monitor's scale in the same Display settings page.
- If your old apps still open on the wrong monitor: close and reopen the app. Some apps remember the last position separately from the primary setting.
