Set Up a Wireless Headset for Work
Overview
A wireless headset frees you from cables during calls and lets you step away from your desk. Most work headsets use either a USB dongle (most reliable) or Bluetooth. This guide covers both for Windows 11 and macOS.
Before You Begin
- Your headset, fully charged.
- The USB dongle that came with the headset, if it has one.
- A free USB port on your laptop or dock.
- The brand-name app the headset uses for firmware updates (optional but recommended).
Steps
USB Dongle Setup (Recommended)
- Plug the USB dongle into your laptop or dock. Windows or macOS recognizes it within a few seconds.
- Power the headset on. The dongle and headset pair automatically.
- On Windows, right-click the speaker icon in the system tray and choose Sound settings. Pick the headset as both Output and Input devices.
- On macOS, open System Settings → Sound. Select the headset under Output and Input.
Bluetooth Setup
- On Windows, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on.
- Put the headset in pairing mode (usually a long press on the power button until an LED flashes blue).
- Click Add device → Bluetooth and select your headset from the list.
- On macOS, open System Settings → Bluetooth, then click Connect next to your headset.
Test the Headset
- Open Microsoft Teams and click your profile picture → Settings → Devices.
- Pick your headset under Speaker and Microphone.
- Click Make a test call to confirm both sides work.
Troubleshooting
- If audio goes through the laptop speakers instead: the headset is paired but not selected as the output device. Pick it in the Sound settings.
- If the mic does not pick up your voice: confirm the headset boom or button is unmuted. Check the input level in Sound settings.
- If the headset cuts out on Bluetooth: USB dongles are more stable. Use the dongle for calls and Bluetooth for music.
- If Teams keeps switching to the wrong device: in Teams Settings → Devices, uncheck Use default device.
- If pairing fails: delete the headset from your Bluetooth list and pair again from scratch.
