Set Up Your Laptop Dock or USB-C Hub

Overview

A docking station or USB-C hub turns your laptop into a full desk setup with one cable. Monitors, keyboard, mouse, headset, and network all run through the dock. This guide covers first-time setup and the common gotchas.

Before You Begin

  • Your dock or USB-C hub, plus the included power adapter and USB-C cable.
  • Monitors, keyboard, mouse, and any other peripherals.
  • A free outlet for the dock's power adapter.
  • Your laptop charged enough to boot if needed.

Steps

  1. Plug the dock's power adapter into the wall and into the dock's power port. A light usually turns on.
  2. Connect monitors to the dock using HDMI or DisplayPort cables. Plug each monitor's own power cable into the outlet.
  3. Connect the keyboard and mouse to the dock's USB ports. Wireless models: plug the receiver in or pair later via Bluetooth.
  4. Connect a wired network cable to the dock if your desk has one.
  5. With everything attached to the dock, connect the dock to your laptop using the included USB-C cable. Use the dock port labeled with a power icon, if there is one — that is the one that charges your laptop.
  6. Power on the laptop. Sign in normally.
  7. Wait 30 to 60 seconds for monitors to display. Windows or macOS detects them automatically.
  8. Open Settings → System → Display (Windows) or System Settings → Displays (Mac) to arrange monitors and set your primary.
  9. Confirm the laptop is charging. Look for the battery indicator with a power icon.

Troubleshooting

  • If only one monitor works: swap the cables between the working and broken monitor to test. If the second monitor still does not work, the dock may not support that resolution — try a lower one.
  • If the laptop does not charge through the dock: confirm the USB-C cable is the one that came with the dock. Generic cables often lack the power delivery wires.
  • If the network port does not work: restart the laptop with the dock connected. Windows installs the network driver on first connect.
  • If the dock disconnects randomly: update the dock's firmware using the manufacturer's app. Most major brands publish updates twice a year.
  • If the laptop runs hot when docked: check the laptop is not stacked under papers or against a wall. Closed-lid use is fine but needs airflow.
