Your First-Day Quick Reference

Overview

Welcome aboard. This page is your one-stop checklist for getting set up on day one. Each item links to a full guide. Work through it top to bottom and you will be ready to go by lunch.

Before You Begin

  • Your welcome email from HR with your work email address.
  • The temporary password your manager gave you (you will change it on first sign-in).
  • Your phone, charged and within reach.
  • A list of any questions to ask your manager or IT.

Steps

  1. Sign in to your new computer. Follow Log Into Your New Windows 11 Computer. This is the foundation for everything else.
  2. Change your temporary password. When prompted, choose a strong passphrase you have never used before.
  3. Set up multi-factor authentication. Install Microsoft Authenticator on your phone and follow Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication with Microsoft Authenticator.
  4. Install your apps. Follow Install Microsoft 365 Apps on Your Computer to get Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
  5. Set up email on your phone. Follow Set Up Email on Your Phone.
  6. Back up your files. Follow Set Up OneDrive on Your Windows PC so your work files are protected from day one.
  7. Connect to office Wi-Fi. If you are on-site, follow Connect to Your Office Wi-Fi.
  8. Bookmark the help desk. Save https://support.bostonmit.com in your browser. This is where you submit tickets.
  9. Meet your team in Teams. Open Microsoft Teams and accept any chat or meeting invitations.

Troubleshooting

  • If you do not have a welcome email yet: check with your manager or HR. IT cannot create your accounts without an HR ticket.
  • If you forgot the temporary password: ask your manager to request a reset. Do not share passwords by email or chat.
  • If something on this list does not apply to your role: skip it and move on. Your manager will tell you about any role-specific tools.
