Record a Meeting in Microsoft Teams
Record a Meeting in Microsoft Teams
Overview
Recording a Teams meeting captures audio, video, and any shared screens. The recording saves to the cloud so you can share it with people who missed the meeting or rewatch later. Always let everyone know before you start recording.
Before You Begin
- The new Microsoft Teams desktop app, signed in with your work account.
- Permission to record. In most companies, only the meeting organizer or someone they designate can record.
- Verbal or written consent from everyone in the meeting. Many places require it by law.
- A meeting that is actively in progress.
Steps
- Join the meeting from the Microsoft Teams desktop app.
- Once the meeting begins, click the More button (three dots) in the meeting toolbar.
- Choose Record and transcribe > Start recording.
- Teams shows a banner letting everyone know the meeting is being recorded.
- Mention the recording out loud at the start. Example: "Heads up, I am recording this for anyone who could not make it."
- To stop, click More > Record and transcribe > Stop recording.
- After the meeting ends, the recording is processed and saved to the organizer's OneDrive (for non-channel meetings) or the channel's SharePoint site (for channel meetings).
- A link to the recording also appears in the meeting chat. Click it to watch or share.
Troubleshooting
- If Start recording is grayed out: you do not have permission. Ask the meeting organizer to record, or to grant you presenter rights.
- If the recording is missing after the meeting: wait 15 minutes. Long meetings take time to process. Check the meeting chat for the link.
- If you cannot find your past recordings: open OneDrive in a browser and look in the Recordings folder. Channel meeting recordings live in the channel's Files tab.
- If audio sounds muffled: make sure each speaker is using a headset, not their laptop's built-in microphone, before the next recording.
- If you need to share the recording outside your company: check with your manager first. Some recordings contain sensitive information.
