Set Up Gmail on Your Android Phone
Set Up Gmail on Your Android Phone
Overview
This guide walks you through adding your work Google Workspace account to the Gmail app on your Android phone. Gmail comes pre-installed on most Android devices and handles work email, calendar, and contacts together.
Before You Begin
- Your work email address and current password.
- Your Android phone running Android 11 or later.
- Multi-factor authentication already set up for your Google account.
- A few minutes of uninterrupted time.
Steps
- On your phone, open the Gmail app. If it is not installed, get it from the Google Play Store — search for Gmail by Google LLC.
- Tap your profile picture in the top right corner.
- Tap Add another account.
- Pick Google from the list of account types.
- Type your full work email address, then tap Next.
- Enter your password, then tap Next.
- Approve the multi-factor authentication prompt — this might come through a Google prompt on another device, an Authenticator app, or a text message.
- Accept the terms when prompted.
- If your company requires it, your phone may ask you to install Android Device Policy or Google Apps Device Policy. Tap Install and follow the prompts.
- Once setup finishes, tap your profile picture again and select your new account to view its inbox.
Troubleshooting
- If the app says your account cannot be added: confirm your administrator has enabled mobile access for Google Workspace. Submit a ticket if you are unsure.
- If multi-factor authentication does not arrive: open the Google app on your phone or sign in at myaccount.google.com to verify your enrolled methods.
- If you see "Couldn't sign in" with no detail: try adding the account through Settings → Accounts → Add account → Google instead of from inside Gmail.
- If calendar events do not appear: open the Google Calendar app and confirm your work account is enabled in Settings.
- If the inbox feels slow: pull down to refresh, or restart the phone.
