Send Email From an Alias in Outlook
Send Email From an Alias in Outlook
Overview
An alias is an extra email address that points to your main mailbox. You might have an alias like sales@yourcompany.com that lands in your inbox alongside mail to your normal address. This guide shows you how to send mail from that alias so replies come back to the right address.
Before You Begin
- Your administrator has already added the alias to your account. You cannot create aliases yourself — submit a ticket if you need one set up.
- Outlook on the web, Outlook for Windows (new Outlook), or Outlook mobile. The classic Windows Outlook does not support sending from aliases.
- About 5 minutes.
Steps
Outlook on the Web
- Open Outlook in your browser at outlook.office.com.
- Click New mail.
- Click the Options tab at the top of the message.
- Click Show From. A From field appears above the To line.
- Click the From address. A dropdown shows your primary address and any aliases.
- Pick the alias you want to send from.
- Compose your message and click Send. Replies will come back to that alias.
Outlook Mobile (iPhone or Android)
- Open the Outlook app and tap the pencil icon to start a new message.
- Tap the From field at the top of the message.
- Pick the alias from the list.
- Compose your message and tap Send.
New Outlook for Windows
- Open New Outlook and click New mail.
- Click the From dropdown at the top of the message.
- Pick the alias and send.
Troubleshooting
- If you do not see your alias in the From dropdown: the alias may not be active yet. Wait an hour, sign out of Outlook, and sign back in. If it still does not appear, submit a ticket.
- If recipients see your primary address instead of the alias: confirm the From field shows the alias before you send. The alias must be selected on every message — it does not stick.
- If you need an alias to become a separate mailbox: that is a different setup. Submit a ticket and we will discuss shared mailbox vs. alias.
- If you use the classic Outlook for Windows: switch to New Outlook using the toggle in the top right corner, or use Outlook on the web for messages that need the alias.
