Fix Wi-Fi Connection Issues on Windows

Overview

Wi-Fi problems on a Windows 11 laptop are usually fixable in a few minutes. This guide walks you through the steps that resolve most issues before you need to call for help.

Before You Begin

  • Your Windows 11 laptop.
  • The name of the Wi-Fi network you are trying to join.
  • The Wi-Fi password, if it is a network you have not used before.
  • A few minutes to try each step in order.

Steps

  1. Click the network icon on the right side of the taskbar. Confirm Wi-Fi is turned on. If it shows off, click to turn it on.
  2. Check that airplane mode is off. The airplane icon should not be highlighted.
  3. Click your network name and select Connect. Enter the password if asked.
  4. If the network does not appear, click the arrow next to Wi-Fi to refresh the list. Move closer to the access point or router.
  5. Open Settings by pressing Windows key + I. Go to Network & internet > Wi-Fi.
  6. Click Manage known networks, find the problem network, click it, then click Forget.
  7. Reconnect from the taskbar. Re-enter the password.
  8. If problems continue, restart your laptop. Save your work first.
  9. After the restart, try connecting again.

Troubleshooting

  • If the network icon shows a globe with a warning: you are connected but cannot reach the internet. Try a different website. Try your phone's hotspot to confirm the issue is with the Wi-Fi network, not your laptop.
  • If you see the network but cannot connect: confirm the password with whoever owns the network. Office passwords are sometimes posted in a shared space or in your welcome email.
  • If only one website fails to load: the issue is likely the website, not your Wi-Fi.
  • If your laptop never sees any networks: open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. Click Reset now and restart. This is a last resort.
  • If nothing works: submit a ticket at support.bostonmit.com with the network name, your laptop model, and what you have already tried.
