Troubleshoot Office Wi-Fi That Keeps Dropping

Overview

If the office Wi-Fi keeps dropping or feels slow, a few quick checks usually pinpoint the cause. This guide walks you through what to try before opening a ticket.

Before You Begin

  • The Wi-Fi network name you connect to at the office.
  • Your laptop or phone showing the problem.
  • A coworker or two who can confirm whether they are seeing the same thing.

Steps

  1. Check whether anyone else nearby is having the same issue. If yes, it is likely a network problem, not your device.
  2. Look at the Wi-Fi icon on your laptop. If it shows full signal but no internet, the issue is upstream, not your laptop.
  3. Move closer to the nearest access point. Office Wi-Fi access points are usually on the ceiling, marked with a small light.
  4. Disconnect and reconnect. On Windows 11, click the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar, click the network name, choose Disconnect, then reconnect.
  5. Restart your laptop if dropouts continue. Save your work first.
  6. Forget and rejoin the network. Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks. Click the network and choose Forget. Reconnect with the password.
  7. If you have a phone, try connecting it to the same network. If the phone also drops, the network is the problem.
  8. Note the exact times the Wi-Fi drops. Include this in a ticket so IT can correlate with the network logs.

Troubleshooting

  • If only your device drops: restart the device. Update your Wi-Fi driver via Windows Update.
  • If everyone is dropping in one area but not others: an access point may be down. Submit a ticket and mention the location (room number, floor, area).
  • If Wi-Fi works but a specific app does not: the issue is the app, not the network. Try the app from a phone hotspot to confirm.
  • If the network shows but you cannot get an IP address: the access point may be saturated. Move closer or wait a few minutes. If it persists, file a ticket.
