Connect a Guest to Your Office Wi-Fi
Overview
When clients or visitors come to the office, they should use the guest Wi-Fi, not the internal network. The guest network gives them internet access without exposing company systems. This guide shows you how to get them online quickly.
Before You Begin
- The name of your office guest Wi-Fi network. It is often labeled with Guest in the name.
- The current guest password or QR code. Many offices post this in the lobby or a conference room.
- The visitor's device (laptop or phone) and a moment to help them connect.
Steps
- Greet your guest and let them know which network to use. Point out the Guest network in their Wi-Fi list, not the internal one.
- On the guest's device, open the Wi-Fi settings. On Windows, click the network icon in the taskbar. On a phone, open Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Tap or click the Guest network name.
- Enter the guest password when prompted. If your office uses a QR code, the guest can scan it with their phone camera to join.
- Some offices show a splash page in the browser after connecting. The guest may need to accept terms, enter their name and email, or click Continue to get internet access.
- Confirm internet works by opening a website on the guest's device.
- If the guest needs Wi-Fi for the whole day, the connection should stay active. They may need to reauthenticate after the time limit on the splash page.
Troubleshooting
- If the guest network does not appear: stand closer to an access point or try a different room. Some networks are not broadcast in every area.
- If the password is rejected: confirm you are using the current one. Many offices rotate guest passwords. Check with your office manager.
- If the splash page never appears: open any http website (not https). Example: http://neverssl.com. The splash page usually triggers on first traffic.
- If a guest needs internal access (file shares, printers): the guest network does not include that. Talk to IT about a temporary internal account.
- If you do not know your office's guest setup: ask your office manager or submit a ticket so IT can document it for next time.
