Reset Your Microsoft 365 Password

Overview

If you have forgotten your Microsoft 365 password, you can reset it yourself in a few minutes using self-service password reset. This guide walks you through the process from a phone or computer.

Before You Begin

  • Access to one of your registered MFA methods: Microsoft Authenticator, a registered phone number, or a security key.
  • A device with internet access. Any modern browser works.
  • Your full work email address (for example, firstname.lastname@yourcompany.com).

Note: If you never set up MFA or recovery options, you cannot self-serve. Contact support and we will reset your password for you after verifying your identity.

Steps

  1. Open a browser and go to https://login.microsoftonline.com.
  2. Click Can't access your account? below the password box.
  3. Choose Work or school account.
  4. Enter your full work email address.
  5. Enter the characters shown in the picture (CAPTCHA), then click Next.
  6. Choose a verification method from the list, for example Approve a notification on my Authenticator app or Text my mobile phone.
  7. Follow the prompt. If a code is sent, type it in. If a notification is sent, approve it on your phone.
  8. If your account requires it, complete a second verification step.
  9. Enter your new password twice. It must meet your company's complexity requirements:
    • At least 12 characters
    • A mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols
    • Not a password you have used before
  10. Click Finish.
  11. Sign in to Outlook, Teams, and your phone's mail app using the new password. You may need to re-enter the password on each device.

Troubleshooting

  • If you do not receive a verification code: check your spam folder, and confirm the phone number on file. If the number is wrong, contact support.
  • If your new password is rejected: it likely matches a recent password or contains your name. Choose something more distinct.
  • If sign-in fails after the reset: wait two minutes. Password changes take a moment to propagate across Microsoft services.
  • If Outlook keeps prompting for the old password: close Outlook, sign out of your Windows account, then sign back in.
