Surge in spam and phishing emails.

Surge in spam and phishing emails.

Hello everyone,

I want to share something we have been seeing for the past few weeks. There has been a surge in spam and phishing emails. Spam and phishing emails are both types of unwanted and potentially harmful messages that you might receive in your inbox. However, they have different goals and methods.

Spam emails are sent in massive volume by botnets or from a wholesale recipient list for commercial purposes. They can be time-consuming to sift through and may carry malicious software. Phishing emails are fraudulent emails or other communications designed to lure a victim into providing confidential information. The message is made to look as though it comes from a trusted sender. Victims are often coaxed into providing information on a scam website.

Both spam and phishing emails can pose serious risks to your personal and financial security, as well as to the integrity of our network. Therefore, it is essential that you learn how to recognize and avoid these types of emails.

Some common signs of spam and phishing emails are:
  • They have a generic greeting or no greeting at all
  • They have spelling or grammatical errors
  • They ask you to click on a link or open an attachment that you are not expecting
  • They ask you to update or verify your personal or financial information
  • They offer you something that sounds too good to be true, such as a free gift or a refund
  • They create a sense of urgency or pressure you to act quickly
  • They have a sender address that does not match the company name or domain

If you receive an email that looks suspicious, do not open it, click on any links, or reply to it. Instead, delete it or report it to our team at support@bostonmit.com. You can also check the legitimacy of the sender by contacting them directly through another channel, such as phone or official website.

We also want to inform you that we have noticed an elevated level of false positives being quarantined in Microsoft 365. This means that some legitimate emails may have been mistakenly marked as spam or phishing by the system. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and we are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

If you think that an email that you were expecting has been quarantined, you can check your junk email folder or contact us for assistance.
