We are writing to inform our clients of an ongoing widespread outage currently affecting Cloudflare, a major global internet infrastructure and security provider. This incident is causing connectivity issues, "500 Internal Server Errors," and service degradation for a significant portion of the internet, including major platforms and potentially client services that utilize Cloudflare for DNS, CDN, or DDoS protection.
Incident Details
Issue: Cloudflare has confirmed they are investigating a critical issue impacting multiple customers globally.
Symptoms: Users may experience HTTP 500 errors when attempting to access websites. Additionally, the Cloudflare Dashboard and API are currently failing or intermittent.
Scope: The outage is widespread. Major global platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), Letterboxd, and even the outage-tracking site DownDetector, are reportedly experiencing downtime or severe latency.
Potential Cause: While Cloudflare has not yet confirmed the root cause, we noted that scheduled maintenance was occurring in their Santiago (SCL) data center earlier today (12:00 – 15:00 UTC). It is currently unclear if this maintenance is linked to the wider systemic failure.
Impact on BMIT Clients If your business utilizes Cloudflare as an upstream provider for:
DDoS mitigation
Content Delivery Network (CDN) caching
DNS management
You may experience intermittent reachability or error messages on your public-facing applications. Please note that this is an external issue stemming from Cloudflare’s global infrastructure and is not a failure of BMIT’s local data center or core network infrastructure.
Current Status & Next Steps
Cloudflare Response: Cloudflare engineers are actively investigating the issue and working to mitigate the impact.
Recommendation At this time, no action is required from your end. We recommend avoiding major configuration changes to your DNS or Edge settings until Cloudflare stabilizes their dashboard and API connectivity.
We will provide a follow-up update once the issue is resolved or if significant new information becomes available.
